some say that the monsters come out at night
the truth is something far from this, the most fearful things come when you fail to try.
the idea of fear may be in sight when you don't succeed, but it is as if you are begging to meet your inner demons when you give in.

Sonnet 91

Some glory in their birth, some in their skill,
Some in their wealth, some in their bodies' force,
Some in their garments, though new-fangled ill,
Some in their hawks and hounds, some in their horse;
And every humour hath his adjunct pleasure,
Wherein it finds a joy above the rest:
But these particulars are not my measure;
All these I better in one general best.
Thy love is better than high birth to me,
Richer than wealth, prouder than garments' cost,
Of more delight than hawks or horses be;
And having thee, of all men's pride I boast:
Wretched in this alone, that thou mayst take
All this away and me most wretched make.

Some people take pride in their family lineage, some take pride in their personal abilities,
some pride themselves on how much money they make, or how powerful they are,
some take pride in their clothing and appearance even though the styles of today will change tomorrow,
some are proud of their material possessions;
and each person is entitled to their own opinion,
each person has his or her favorite thing:
however, i disagree with other people when it comes to being proud;
my pride goes to something much more significant,
your love is better than nobility,
more important than money, and more valuable than appearances
it brings me more joy than any personal possession;
with you i am more proud than any man:
if someone doesnt like this and decides to take it away
i would be a miserable person.

Wife of Bath

I believe that the wife of Bath is someone who can be proud of because she is someone who set out to do something and she is accomplishing what she set out to do. the converse argument to this would be to say that she manipulated people and lied to them to get their way. Some could call her a grave-robber, some could call her "on the grind".

Modern Day Pardoner

In my opinion, I believe the modern day pardoner would be Billy Mays i.e."The OxyClean Guy". he pretty much sells you ANYTHING. I have seen him on television selling me anything from portable light switches to cleaning products. Basically this guy is the oracle of selling materials that dont really work and really pursuading people that they really need it.

Grendel is not a Monster

In our Survey of Liturature class, the discussion came up comparing Grendel’s perspective of the Beowulf story to the Beowulf “song” that is explained in the poem. And in the end of the day, it is all due to perspective. The protagonist’s view is almost always going to be seen as the right thing to do, but it is a rare situation when we actually get to hear the antagonist’s views. In the situation of Beowulf, Grendel is seen by almost everyone as a monster. However, I just believe that he is a misunderstood creature with animal like characteristics. But it is impossible to blame him for the things that he does because that is the way that he was raised, when you are ignorant to anything other than animalistic characteristics, you are due to act like an animal. In class I made the reference to a bear. When a bear attacks campers, it cannot be blames for its natural instincts, and they should not be punished for them. Why should this animal like character be punished for animal like characteristics. He is in no way, shape, or form a monster. He is just reacting off instinct, and his instinctual acts were not the typical actions for society. So he was punished for it.

Riddle

We move in pairs,
Up and down stairs,
Some keep spares,
and others wouldn't dare,
Hit us with coins or step over cracks,
We are filled with comfort but style we lack,
Sporting Abe on the front and brown on the back

Nobakov's Essay

i agree with what the essay is saying, but it is nothing more than a personal perspective of one man's idea on what "good readers" should do. not everyone has to read a story multiple times to understand it. for my Brit Lit class, we are assigned readings on a daily basis, majority of the time, we dont get an opportunity to read stories multiple times. if you are capable of taking good notes, you should be about to understand a reading with ease.
i do agree with what Nabokov says, "the reader should have a dictionary" because not everything is understood. and one should always understand or make note of the things that are not understood in a text.
